Mia Hot Water Bottle Cover



Hot water bottles are a comforting item which are enhanced by a cosy hot water bottle cover.  This free knitting pattern is simple yet effective.  For the beginner, this free knitting pattern for a hot water bottle cover introduces the use of colour and simple shapings. This free knitting pattern uses double knitting yarn with 4mm needles.  For the more experienced knitter it provides a quick and easy stash buster.  For this hot water bottle cover we have used a cheery red, white and green colour combination, however you may prefer to complete this free knitting pattern using different tones of the same colour. 

This pattern makes a cover to fit a standard hot water bottle.

Requirements:Print

1 pair of 4.0mm Needles
100g ball of green double knitting yarn
100g ball of red double knitting yarn
100g ball of white double knitting yarn
Length of poppers on tape or similar.
Needle and thread for sewing on popper tape

To make sides of Hot Water Bottle Cover (need 2 alike):

Using green yarn and 4mm needles, cast on 44 stitches.
Work 2 rows in stocking stitch starting with a K row.
Commence pattern introducing coloured yarns as required
Row 1 (using red yarn) K2, [S1, K5] repeat to end
Row 2 (using red yarn) Purl to end
Row 3 (using white yarn) [K5, S1] repeat to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 4 (using white yarn) Purl to end
Row 5 (using green yarn) K2, [S1, K5] repeat to end
Row 6 (using green yarn) Purl to end
Row 7 (using red yarn) K5, S1] repeat to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 8 (using red yarn) Purl to end
Row 9 (using white yarn) K2, [S1, K5] repeat to end
Row 10 (using white yarn) Purl to end
Row 11 (using green yarn) K5, S1] repeat to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 12 (using green yarn) Purl to end
Repeat rows 1 to 12 of pattern a further 5 times (6 times in total).

To shape the top (keeping pattern correct):

Row 1:  Pattern 16, ML1, K12, ML1, pattern 16 (46 sts)
Row 2:  Purl to end
Row 3:  Pattern 16, ML1, K14, ML1, pattern 16   (48sts)
Row 4:  Purl to end
Row 5:  Cast off 4 sts, Pattern 12, ML1, K16, ML1, Pattern 16   (44 sts)
Row 6:  Cast off 4 sts, Purl to end   (40 sts)
Row 7:  Cast off 4 sts, Pattern 8, K18, Pattern to end   (36 sts)
Row 8:  Cast off 4 sts, Purl to end   (32 sts)
Row 9:  Cast off 4 sts, Pattern 4, K18, Pattern to end   (28 sts)
Row 10:  Cast off 4 sts, Purl to end   (24 sts)
Row 11:  Cast off 4 sts, K18, Pattern to end   (20 sts)
Row 12:  Cast off 4 sts, Purl to end   (16 sts)
Continue using red yarn only and work 2 rows in stocking stitch starting with a knit row.
Next row:  [M1] repeat to end  (32 sts)
Next row: Purl
Using these 32sts work 34 rows in K2, P2 rib.  Cast off loosely.

To make Up:

Sew in any unfinished ends of yarn.  With right sides together and wrong side facing stitch up the side seams.  Stitch the popper tape along the wrong side bottom of each piece so that the poppers align.  Turn the piece the right way out.  Fold the red rib top outwards to make a polo neck and catch it down centre front and back onto the first shape row.
