Penguin Jumper & Trousers for a Tiny Tear Sized Doll (16")


This free knitting pattern is for a knitted jumper & Trousers  for a 16" doll (equivalent to Tiny Tears in size) with a Penguin motif.  The perfect christmas present for any child who loves dressing up dolls.

 

Requirements:

1 pair of 3.25mm needles 
1 pair of 4mm needles 
Optional a 3.25mm circular needle for neckband 
50g of DK yarn for jumper. 
Oddments of DK yarn in appropriate colours for the motif. 
3 stitch holders or safety pins 
Fasteners for back (3 xPress-Studs or thin Velcro) 
Shearing Elastic

Tension:
Tension 22sts or 28 rows to 10 cm, using stocking stitch on 4.0 mm needles

Pattern:print

Jumper Front (make 1): 
Using 3.25mm needles and the pink yarn cast on 37 stitches using the main colour.   
Row 1: K1, [P1, K1] repeat to end  
Row 2: P1, [K1, P1] repeat to end 

 

Repeat these two rows twice more. 

Change to 4 mm needles and working in stocking stitch (starting with a knit row) follow the chart below for the next 31 rows changing colour as required. 

To shape the neck: 

Row 1:  Next row P15, turn and complete this side first 

Row 2:  K1 K2tog, K12  (14 sts). 

Row 3:  P11, P2tog, P1  (13 sts) 

Row 4:  K1 K2 tog, K10  (12 sts) 

Row 5:  Purl to end 

Row 6:  K1 K2 tog, K9  (11sts)

Cast off    
Slip the next 7 sts at centre onto a safety pin (or small stitch holder) 

 

With the wrong side of work facing, rejoin the yarn at neck edge of remaining sts and purl to the end. 

Row 1:  K12 K2tog, K1  (14 sts). 

Row 2:  P1, P2tog, P11  (13 sts) 

Row 3:  K10 K2 tog, K1  (12 sts) 

Row 4:  Purl to end 

Row 5:  K9 K2 tog, K1  (11sts) 

Row 6:  Purl to end 

Row 7:  Knit to end 

Row 8:  Purl to end

Jumper Left Back (Make 1): 
Using 3.25mm needles and main cast on 20 sts. 
Row 1: K4, [P1, K1] repeat to end 
Row 2: [P1, K1] repeat to last 4 sts, p1, K3 
Repeat these two rows twice more. 
Change to 4mm needles and commence thus: 
Row 1:  Knit to end 
Row 2: Purl to last 3 sts, K3 
Repeat the above 2 rows until 32 rows have been worked, ending with a purl row.  
To shape the neck: 
Row1: K5 sts, slip these 5 sts onto a suitable holder, knit to end  (15 sts) 
Row 2:  P12, P2tog, P1  (14sts) 
Row 3:  K1, K2tog, K11 (13 sts) 
Row 4:  P10, P2tog, P1  (12 sts) 
Row 5:  Knit to end 
Row 6:  P9, P2tog, P1  (11sts) 
Row 7:  Knit to end 
Row 8:  Purl to end 
Cast off   

Jumper Right Back (Make 1): 
Using 3.25mm needles and main cast on 20 sts. 
Row 1: [K1,P1,] repeat until last 4 sts, K4 
Row 2: K3, [P1,K1], rpt to last st, P1 Repeat these two rows twice more. 
Change to 4mm needles and commence thus: 
Row 1:  Knit to end 
Row 2: K3, Purl to end 
Repeat these 2 rows until 31 rows have been worked, ending on a knit row (row 1). 
To shape the neck: 
Row1: K3, P2, slip these 5 sts onto a suitable holder, purl to end (15 sts) 
Row 2:  K12, K2tog, K1  (14sts) 
Row 3:  P1, P2tog, P11 (13 sts) 
Row 4:  K10, K2tog, K1  (12 sts) 
Row 5:  Purl to end 
Row 6:  K9, K2tog, K1  (11sts) 
Row 7:  Purl to end 
Row 8:  Knit to end 
Row 9:  Purl to end 
Cast off    

Sleeves (make 2): 

Using 3.25mm needles and main cast on 23 sts. 
Row 1: K1, [P1, K1] repeat to end 
Row 2: P1, [K1, P1] repeat to end 
Repeat these two rows, then row 1 once more (5 rows worked in total). 
Inc row: P1, [K1, P1] three times [M1] into next 8 sts, [K1, P1] four times. (31sts). 
Change to 4mm needles. 
Work in stocking st until the piece measures 9cm (3.5”) ending with a purl row. 
Cast off.  

Beak (make 1): 
Using 3.25mm needles and gold, cast on 3 sts.   
Row 1: Knit to end 
Row 2: Purl to end 
Row 3: K3 tog 
Cast off remaining st.  

Neckband: 
Using 3.25mm needles and main colour.  

 

With right side of work facing, knit across 5sts from left back.  Pick up and knit 8sts from along the neck shaping on the left back, and a further 8sts from the front left neck shaping.  Knit across the 7sts from the stitch holder on the front.  Then pick up and knit 8sts from the right front neck shaping and a further 8 sts from the back right neck shaping.  Finally knit across the 5sts on the stitch holder on the right back  (49sts total). 
Row 1:  K3, P1, [K1, P1] repeat to last 3 sts, k3 
Row 2:  K3,  [K1, P1] repeat to last 4 sts, k4
Repeat the above 2 rows once and then cast off loosely keeping continuity of the rib.

To make up Jumper:

Fold sleeves in half lengthways and mark center of cast off edges. Matching center stitch to shoulder seam, pin sleeve to front and back.  Sew evenly in place. Sew down length of sleeve and side seams.  Sew press-studs evenly down back button bands.  Add optional decorative buttons over the press-studs if desired.  Sew beak into position and using grey yarn make eyes by making stitches as shown in picture.

Back of Trousers (Make 1):

Leg 1. 
Using 4mm needles cast on 16 sts. 
Row 1:  [K1, P1] repeat to end. 
Repeat this row a further 5 times (6 rows in total) 
Row 7:  rib 2 [M1, P1] repeat to end (23 sts) 
Commencing with a Knit row work , 26 rows of stocking stitch. 
Leave these stitches on a holder or spare needle. 
Leg 2. 
Using 4mm needles cast on 16 sts. 
Row 1:  [K1, P1] repeat to end. 
Repeat this row a further 5 times (6 rows in total) 
Row 7:  rib 2 [M1, P1] repeat to end (23 sts) 
Commencing with a Knit row, work 26 rows of stocking stitch, ending with a purl row.   
Next row: knit across these stitches and then pick up the ones on the spare needle. (46 sts) 
Work 20 rows in stocking stitch 
To shape the bottom: 
Row 1:  Knit to last 6 sts, turn 
Row 2:  Purl to last 6 sts, turn. 
Row 3:  Knit to last 12 sts, turn. 
Row 4:  Purl to last 12 sts, turn. 
Row 5:  Knit to end 
Row 6:  Purl to end 
Change to 3.75mm needles. 
Row 1:  [K1, P1] to end. 
Repeat this row a further 7 times (8 rows of rib in total) 
Cast off.

Front of Trousers (Make 1):
Leg 1. 
Using 4mm needles cast on 16 sts. 
Row 1:  [K1, P1] repeat to end. 
Repeat this row a further 5 times (6 rows in total) 
Row 7:  rib 2 [M1, P1] repeat to end (23 sts) 
Commencing with a K row, work  26 rows of stocking stitch, ending with a Purl row. 
Leave these stitches on a holder or spare needle.   
Leg 2. 
Using 4mm needles cast on 16 sts. 
Row 1:  [K1, P1] repeat to end. 
Repeat this row a further 5 times (6 rows in total) 
Row 7:  rib 2 [M1, P1] repeat to end (23 sts) 
Commencing with a Knit row, work  26 rows of stocking stitch. ending with a purl row.  
Next row:  Knit across these stitches and then the ones on the spare needle. (46 sts) 
Work 20 rows in stocking stitch 
Change to 3.75mm needles. 
Row 1:  [K1, P1] to end. 
Repeat this row a further 7 times (8 rows of rib in total) 
Cast off.   

To make up:
Trousers Sew in all loose ends.  Sew up leg seams and side seams.  Fold cast off edge over inside to start of ribbing and stitch into place, leaving a small gap to thread 4 strand elastic through the gap and secure. Stitch up the closed.
