Childs Character Hat

 


This free knitting pattern for a colds character hat was originally designed for friend's children.   The hat is prepared with double knitting yarn and includes simple shaping and colour changes.  A knowledge of simple crochet techniques are required for the creation of the eye and the facial creatures are embroidered on separately.  The eyes can be supplied through the shop if you are unable to crochet.  This free knitting pattern for a childs character hat is designed to fit head sizes of 4-6 yrs or 7-9 yrs.  The instructions for the larger head size is given in brackets.


Requirements:
1 x 100g of double knitting yarn in pale yellow
1 x 20g of double knitting yarn in brown
1 x 50g of double knitting yarn in pink or an appropriate colour for main body
1 x 5g of double knitting yarn in black
1 x 5g of double knitting yarn in pale grey
1 x 3.25mm Knitting Needles
1 x 4.0mm Knitting Needles 
1 x 3.0mm Crochet Hook
Wool Needle for making up

To make hat (make 1):
Using 3.25mm needles and the pink yarn cast on 86 (94) stitches. 
Rib:  [K1, P1] to end
Repeat this row a further 10 times, work 11 rows in total.
Next row:  [Rib 15 (9) M1] repeat a further 4 (8) times, rib to end.  91  (103) sts

Change to 4mm needles and the yellow yarn starting with a knit row work 14 rows in stocking stitch.  Change to brown yarn and work 4 rows in stocking stitch.  Chenge back to yellow yarn and continue in stocking stitch until work measures 13 (14) cm in total, ending with a purl row.  

Shape Crown:
Row 1:  K1, [K2tog, K4] repeat a further 14 (16) times  76 (86) sts
Row 2:  Purl to end
Row 3:  Knit to end
Row 4:  Purl to end
Row 5:  K1, [K2tog, K3] repeat a further 14 (16) times  61 (69) sts
Row 6:  Purl to end
Row 7:  Knit to end
Row 8:  Purl to end
Row 9:  K1, [K2tog, K2] repeat a further 14 (16) times  46 (52) sts

Work a further 1 (3) row(s) without shaping.

Break off yarn, Thread yarn through remaining stitchess draw up and fasten off.

To make bow (make 1 of each):
Using 3.25mm needles and the pink yarn cast on 15 stitches.  Starting with a knit row, work 8 rows in stocking stitch.  Cast off.
Using 3.25mm needles and the pink yarn cast on 4 stitches.  Starting with a knit row, work 6 rows in stocking stitch.  Cast off.

To make eye (make 1):

Using black yearn and a 3mm crochet hook, make 4 chains and join into a ring.
Round 1: Using black Ch2, 8 htr into ring, join with a sl st into initial 2ch and fasten off. (8sts)
Round 2: Using brown Ch2, 2 htr into each htr, join with a sl st into initial 2ch and fasten off. (16sts)
Round 3: Using white Ch2, [1htr into next htr, 2htr into next htr] 8times, join with slst into initial 2 ch and fasten off. (24sts)
Round 4: Using white Ch2, [1htr into each of next 2htr, 2htr into next htr] 8times, join with ss into initial 2 ch. (40sts)
Round 5: Using grey work 1 dc into each htr, join with slst into initial dc.


To make Up:
Carefully sew down back of hat ensuring that the seam cannot be seen on the outside of the hat.  
Secure all loose ends and position eye at centred of front on middle of brown strip and sew in place.
Using black yarn stitch a mouth under the eye.
Take a length of black yarn of approximately 30 cm length.  Thread the yarn through the top of the crown of the hat and secure in place by oversewing.  Leave both ends of the yarn hanging long at present. Repeat until desired amount of hair is in place.

Wrap the small piece of bow around the middle of the larger piece to create a bow shape and sew into place on the top hat.  Using the wool needle thread the individual strands of wool through the center of the bow to form a pony tail.  Trim hair to an even length.
