Adults Llama Hat, Scarf & Mittens Set

This hat was designed for a friend who is very keen on Llamas.  This free knitting pattern includes a hat, scarf and gloves set to fit a typically sized adult.  The hat has a tie string at the top of the head making it quick and simple to make without the need for lots of shaping.  This set in made in double knitting yarn.

Requirements:

4 x 100g of double knitting yarn in main colour
1 x 100g of double knitting yarn in contrasting colours
1 x 3.75mm Knitting Needles
1 x 4mm Knitting Needles

Tension:
Tension 24sts or 30 rows to 10cm, using stocking stitch on 4 mm needles

Pattern For Hat (make 2):
Print copy of free knitting pattern ribbed bobble hat

Using 3.75mm Needles and main colour, cast on 56 sts
Row 1:  [K1, P1] repeat to end
Row 2:  [K1, P1] repeat to end
Repeat these 2 rows a further 9 times (20 rows in total)
Change to 4mm needles and starting with a knit row work 10 rows in stocking stitch.
Join in contrasting colour and continue working in stocking stitch while completing next 24 rows as shown in pattern block A below:
Securely fasten off the contrasting colour and using only the main colour continue in stocking stitch for a further 20 rows.  Cast Off.

To make Up:
Sew up sides and top of hat.  Make 2 tie strings for the top of the hat by casting on 50sts, then casting off and secure.  Attach a tie string to the top corner of hat at both sides.  For best effect these should be attached after sewing up the edges not by incorporating them into the seam.


Pattern For scarf (make 1):

Using 4mm Needles and main colour, cast on 36 sts and starting with a knit row work 10 rows in stocking stitch.
Join in contrasting colour and continue working in stocking stitch while completing next 24 rows as shown in pattern block B below:

Securely fasten off the contrasting colour and using only the main colour continue in stocking stitch until work measures 60 inches for an adults scarf or desired length of different.

Join in contrasting colour and continue working in stocking stitch while completing next 24 rows as shown in pattern block C below:

Securely fasten off the contrasting colour and using only the main colour continue in stocking stitch for a further 10 rows.  Cast Off.


To make up:

Secure the ends of the wool. 
Make 8 tassels of approximately 10cm in length and attach onto the loops.  For this scarf I used the long side of a DVD box to prepare the tassels and wrapped the wool around the box 8 times for each tassel.  Secure firmly tassels to the bottom layer of loops in the scarf.  Trim the tassels to required length.



For Mittens

Right mitten (Make 1):
Using 3.75mm needles cast on 40 sts
Row 1:  [K1, P1] repeat to end
Row 2:  [K1, P1] repeat to end
Repeat these 2 rows a further 8 times, then row one once more (19 rows in total)
Next row [K6, M1] repeat 5 times, knit to end (46 sts)
Change to 4mm needles and work 6 rows in stocking stitch ending on a purl row
Shape thumb

Row 1:  K23, m1,K3, M1 knit to end  (48 sts)
Row 2:  Purl to end
Row 3:  Knit to end
Row 4:  Purl to end
Row 5:  K23, M1, K5, M1, knit to end  (50 sts)
Row 6:  Purl to end
Row 7:  K23, m1, K7, M1 knit to end  (52 sts)
Row 8:  Purl to end
Row 9:  K3 Work next 17 sts from pattern block D, K3 M1, K9, M1 knit to end  (54sts)
Row 10:  Purl to last 20 sts, work next 17 off pattern block, purl to end
Continue with shaping for mitten, incorporating pattern in correct place for next 18 rows.
Row 11:  K23, m1, K11, M1 knit to end  (56sts)
Row 12:  Purl to end
Row 13:  K23, m1, K13, M1 knit to end  (58sts)
Row 14:  Purl to end
Row 15:  K38, turn.
Row 16:  P15, turn.
Work 14 rows in stocking stitch on these 15 sts (ending with a purl row)
Next row- K1 [K2 tog] Repeat to end (8sts)
Break yarn, run through these 8 stitches draw up and secure.

With right side facing , rejoin yarn at base of thumb and Knit the remaining 20 sts across the row.
Next row:  Purl across all 43 stitches on needle, continuing to incorporate pattern as required

Break yarn, run through these 8 stitches draw up and secure.
