Lemon Dress and Hairband for a 16" Doll (Tiny Tears)


This free knitting pattern is for a knitted dress and matching hairband for a 16" doll (equivalent to Tiny Tears in size).  These knitted tiny tears clothes make perfect christmas present for any child who loves dressing up dolls.  This free knitting pattern is quick to knit.  The border pattern is created using knit and purl stitches, so it is ideal for less experienced knitters.  

 

Requirements:

1 pair of 3.25mm needles   
1 pair of 4mm needles   
100g of DK yarn  
Safety pins or stitch holder 
6 press studs or fastenings for back   
Shearing Elastic  
Elastic (for hair band)  
Wool Needle

Tension:
Tension 22sts or 30 rows to 10 cm, using stocking stitch on 4.0 mm needles

Body of Dress (Make 1)

Using 4 mm needles, cast on 105 sts. 
Commence pattern 
Row 1: (Right side): Knit to end 
Row 2: [K1, P4], repeat to end 
Row 3: [K3, P2], repeat to end 
Row 4: [K3, P2], repeat to end 
Row 5: [K1, P4], repeat to end 
Row 6: Knit to end 
Repeat these 6 rows once more. 
Starting with a knit row, work 26 rows stocking stitch. 
Next row: K5 [K2 tog, K8] repeat to end (95sts) 
Change to 3.25mm needles 
Next row: Purl to end 
Work 6 rows of pattern 
Change to 4mm needles 
Next row: K3 [K2 tog K1] repeat to last 2 sts, K2 (65sts) 
Starting with a Purl row, work 5 rows stocking stitch 

Next row: K14, cast off next 4 sts.  Knit until there are 29 sts on right hand needle after the cast off.  Cast off a further 4 sts.  Knit to end.   

 

Right Back 
Working on the last 14 sts only and starting with a purl row, work 17 rows stocking stitch.  
Next row: Cast off 7 sts and slip the remaining stitches onto a safety pin.

Front
With wrong side facing rejoin yarn and purl 29sts, turn and work on these sts.
Starting with a knit row work 7 rows in stocking stitch. 
Next row: P11, turn and complete this side first to shape neck. 
Next row: K2tog, Knit to end (10 sts) 
Next row: P8, P2tog (9 sts) 
Next row: K2tog, Knit to end (8 sts) 
Next row: Purl to end 
Next row: K2tog, Knit to end  (7sts) 
Next row: Purl to end 
Next row: Knit to end 
Next row: Purl to end 
Next row: Knit to end 
Cast off 

Slip the next 7 centre sts onto a safety pin.  

With wrong side facing rejoin yarn and purl to end.  
Next row: K9, K2tog (10 sts) 
Next row: P2 tog Purl to end (9 sts) 
Next row: K7, K2tog (8 sts) 
Next row: Purl to end 
Next row: K6, K2tog (7sts)

Left Back 
With wrong side facing rejoin yarn to remaining sts and purl to end of row. (these sts form the left back)
Starting with a Knit row work 16 rows stocking stitch.
Next row: Cast off 7 sts and slip the remaining sts onto a safety pin.


Sleeves (make 2) 


Using 4mm needles cast on 35 sts. 
Row 1: (Right side): Knit to end 
Row 2: [K1, P4], repeat to end 
Row 3: [K3, P2], repeat to end 
Row 4: [K3, P2], repeat to end 
Row 5: [K1, P4], repeat to end 
Row 6: Knit to end 
Starting with a purl row, work 3 rows stocking stitch. 
Next row: Cast off 3 sts, knit to end 
Next row: Cast off 3 sts, Purl to end 
Next row: Cast off 3 sts, knit to end 
Next row: Cast off 3 sts, Purl to end 
Next row: Cast off 3 sts, knit to end 
Next row: Cast off 3sts, [P2tog] repeat to end. 

Cast off.  

To Make Up: 

Join shoulder seams. 

Using 4mm needles and right side facing, knit across the 7sts from left back, pick up and knit 7sts from front left slope, knit across 7sts on safety pin at centre front, pick up and knit 7 sts from front right slope, then knit across 7 sts at right back neck. 
Next row Purl to end 
Work 6 rows of pattern 
Cast off 

With right side facing and using 3.25 mm needles pick up and knit 57 sts along the left back. Knit 4 rows. Cast off.   
With right side facing and using 3.25 mm needles pick up and knit 57 sts along the right back. Knit 4 rows. Cast off.   
Join the sleeve seams.  Insert the sleeves in at the top easing if required.   
Sew 6 press studs along the back borders.  
Catch optional shirring around the wrong side of the waist band if desired.   

Hairband (make 1):

Using 3.25 mm needles cast on 90 sts. 
Row 1 (Right side): Knit to end 
Row 2: [K1, P4], repeat to end 
Row 3: [K3, P2], repeat to end 
Row 4: [K3, P2], repeat to end 
Row 5: [K1, P4], repeat to end 
Row 6: Knit to end 
Row 7: Knit to end 
Row 8: [K1, P4], repeat to end 
Row 9: [K3, P2], repeat to end 
Row 10: [K3, P2], repeat to end 
Row 11: [K1, P4], repeat to end 
Row 12: Knit to end 
Cast  off   To make up.  
Join the cast on and cast off edges.  
Thread sufficient elastic for fit through resulting tube and sew elastic ends together.  Position knitted piece so that joins are hidden.
