Knitted Book Cover / Bag


This is a free knitting pattern for a book bag or book cover.  It is a knitted cover which slips over the external cover of the book keeping it clean and undamaged.  The book bag / book cover comes complete with handles and an integral book mark, so you won't lose your page while on the move.  This free knitting pattern for a book bag or book cover is quick and simple to make and is an easy project for any one new to knitting.  The handles on the bag shown here have been crocheted for additional strength, but if you don't want the crochet simple plait nine lengths of wool together for a similar effect.  Two patterns have been provided below the first for hard backed books (6" wide x 9.5" high x 1.5" thick) or for paper back books (6" wide x 8" high x 1.5" thick)

 

Requirements:
1 x 50g Cotton DK Yarn
1 x 4.0mm Knitting Needles
1 x 5mm Crochet Hook (optional for handles)
1 x large decorative button  *
1 x small decorative button or similar decoration *

*  These buttons are available from the Nixneedles shop if required.


Pattern for Hard Backed book:
Print

Book Bag (make 1):
Using 4.0mm needles cast on 52 stitches.
Using stocking stitch continue until work measures 21".  Cast Off.

Handles (Make 1)
Using a 5mm crochet hook, crochet 3 individual lengths of chain.  The length of each should be 40" (102cm).  Plait these lengths of chain together.

To make Up:
Fold over the top and bottom 3" of the book bag and sew up the folded sides of the bag. Securely attach handles as shown in the diagram below:  Attach a large decorative button to the front of the bag.  Attach a decorative button or similar decoration to the end of a length of yarn.  Securely attach yarn to the top center of the book cover.

Pattern for Paper Backed book:

Book Bag (make 1):
Using 4.0mm needles cast on 44 stitches.
Using stocking stitch continue until work measures 15.5".  Cast Off.

Handles (Make 1)
Using a 5mm crochet hook, crochet 3 individual lengths of chain.  The length of each should be 36" (92cm).  Plait these lengths of chain together.

To make Up:
Fold over the top and bottom 2" of the book bag and sew up the folded sides of the bag. Securely attach handles as shown in the previous diagram.  Attach a large decorative button to the front of the bag.  Attach a decorative button or similar decoration to the end of a length of yarn.  Securely attach yarn to the top center of the book cover.
