Child's Odds and Ends Bag and Purse.

This free knitting pattern for a child's Odds and Ends bag & purse.  The bag measures approximately 18 x 22 cm (7 x 8.5 inches) and is perfect for holding all their secret treasures.  The odds and ends bag is knitted in stockings stitch using scraps of double knitting (any length over 14 inches is suitable) in a variety of colours or textures, to produce a bag which is light and easy to handle. 
The matching purse measures 10cm x 7.5cm (4 x 3 inches) and is the perfect size to allow to keep pocket money safe.

Requirements for Bag:


1 pair of 4.0mm Needles
50g oddments of double Knitting Yarn in a variety of colours
1m decorative piping cord (~1cm diameter) for handle.
2 large bored beads for center of flower
2 x large press-studs

To Make Bag (make 1):
Using 4.0mm needles, cast on 35 stitches
Work in stocking stitch till work measures 56 cm (22 inches) changing yarns randomly as required through the garment.  The bag in the image has a textured yarn added at the bottom of the bag as a feature.  To add a similar look this yarn should be added when work measures 22 and 23cm (8.5 to 9.0 inches) in length.

To make flowers (make 2 alike):
Using 4.0mm needles and a complementary colour, cast on 5 stitches
Row 1: knit to end
Row 2: knit to end
Row 3: Cast off 3 stitches, K1 (2 sts)
Row 4: K2, cast on 3 sts  (5 sts)
Row 5: knit to end
Row 6: knit to end
Row 7: Cast off 3 stitches, K1 (2 sts)
Row 8: K2, cast on 3 sts  (5 sts)
Row 9: knit to end
Row 10: knit to end
Row 11: Cast off 3 stitches, K1 (2 sts)
Row 12: K2, cast on 3 sts  (5 sts)
Row 13: knit to end

To Make Up:

Sew in any unfinished ends of yarn.  With right side facing fold the bag, so that the main body of the bag is approximately 23 cm (9 inches) in length and the remaining work forms a flap of approximately 10cm (4 inches) in length to flop over the bag and close it.  Sew up the side seams.  Attach the piping cord to the side seams of the bag just under the flap.  Attach two large press-studs onto the bottom edge of the flap and in the corresponding place on the front of the main bag. 
For the flowers:  Sew together cast on and cast off edges of the flower.  Sew in loose ends. Using the same colour yarn, attach the centre of each flower to the bag flap, positioned over press-stud, an optional bead can be threaded onto the yarn for that extra sparkle.

1 pair of 4.0mm Needles
25g oddments of double Knitting Yarn in a variety of colours
1 bead for center of flower
1 x large press-stud

To Make Purse (make 1):
Using 4.0mm needles, cast on 22 stitches
Work in stocking stitch till work measures 15 cm (6 inches) changing yarns randomly as required through the work, ending on a purl row.
To shape top:
Row 1: K1, S1, K1, PSSO knit to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1  (20 sts)
Row 2 and every even row:  Purl to end
Row 3: K1, S1, K1, PSSO knit to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1  (18 sts)
Row 5: K1, S1, K1, PSSO knit to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1  (16 sts)
Row 7: K1, S1, K1, PSSO knit to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1  (14 sts)

For the flowers:  Sew together cast on and cast off edges of the flower.  Sew in loose ends. Using the same colour yarn, attach the centre of each flower to the bag flap, positioned over press stud, an optional bead can be threaded onto the yarn for that extra sparkle.
