Rainbow Tea Cosy.



Here you will find a free knitting pattern for a Rainbow tea cosy prepared from double knitting yarn.

The free knitting pattern below produces a beautiful tea cosy, to fit a standard two cup tea pot and is perfect to brighten up any breakfast table.

Requirements:

20g Double Knitting Yarn in Red
20g Double Knitting Yarn in Orange 20g Double Knitting Yarn in Yellow
20g Double Knitting Yarn in Green
20g Double Knitting Yarn in Blue
20g Double Knitting Yarn in Indigo (we used pale purple)
20g Double Knitting Yarn in Violet (we used brighter purple)
1 x 4.0mm Knitting Needles

Instructions:

Abbreviations.

 K2tog     Knit two together (knit next two stitches together as if they were a single stitch (decreasing a stitch)
     
 K3tog     Knit three together (knit next three stitches together as if they were a single stitch (decreasing 2 stitches)      
P2tog
    Purl two together (purl next two stitches together as if they were a single stitch (decreasing a stitch)

     instructions within square brackets to be repeated as specified after bracket
     


To make sides of tea cosy (need 2 alike):
Using 4.0mm needles and the red yarn cast on 27 stitches.
Row 1:  [K1, P1] repeat to last stitch K1
Row 2:  [P1, K1] repeat to last stitch P1
Row 3:  [K1, P1] repeat to last stitch K1
Row 4:  [P1, K1] repeat to last stitch P1
Row 5:  [K1, P1] repeat to last stitch K1
Row 6:  [P1, K1] repeat to last stitch P1

Change to the orange yarn
Row 7:  Purl to end
Row 8:  [P1, K1] repeat to last stitch P1
Row 9:  [K1, P1] repeat to last stitch K1
Row 10: [P1, K1] repeat to last stitch P1
Row 11: [K1, P1] repeat to last stitch K1
Row 12: [P1, K1] repeat to last stitch P1

Repeat rows 7 to 12 in sequence with the yellow yarn and then with the green and blue yarns.
Change to the Indigo yarn and repeat row 7-9 inclusive.

Shape top:
Row 1:   K1, P1, K2tog, [K1, P1] twice, K1, K2 tog, [P1, K1] twice, P1, K2 tog, [K1, P1] twice, K1, K2 tog, P1, K1   (23 sts)
Row 2:  P1, K1, P2, K1, P1, K1, P2, [K1, P1] twice, K1, P2, K1, P1, K1, P2, K1, P1
Row 3:  K1, P1, K2tog, [P1, K1] twice P2tog, [K1, P1] twice, K2tog, [P1, K1] twice, P2tog, K1  (19 sts)
Row 4:  [P1, K1] repeat to last st P1
Row 5:  [K1, P1, K2tog] twice, K1, P1, K1, [K2tog, P1, K1] twice  (15 sts)
Row 6:  P1, K1, [P2, K1] four times, P1
Row 7:  [K2tog] three times, K3 tog, [K2tog] three times  (7 sts)

Break yarn and using a needle thread remaining stitches onto yarn and pull tight.  Secure the end of the yarn.

To make Pompom:

The Pompoms shown here were created on cardboard discs, using the violet coloured yarn.  Dimension of inner circle = 1.0cm.  Dimension of Outer circle = 3.0cm.

To make Up:
Join top of tea cosy together.  If available fit around tea pot and mark the points at which the spout and the handle will need to fit through the tea cosy.  Remove from tea pot and join the sides together, leaving gaps where marked for the spout and handle.   Secure ends and sew in.  Securely attach Pompom to the top of the teacosy.
