The Cable Method of Casting On

This method starts like the basic method, with a slip knot, from which you make the second stitch.  After that it becomes very slightly different, as the stitches are made from between the last two stitches rather than from the last stitch.
The cable method of casting on creates a very decorative edge to the knitting, however this technique is more time consuming than the basic method, tends to produce tighter stitches on the needles making stitches harder to count and mistakes more difficult to see and rectify.  Due to the nature of the casting on it is almost impossible to recover a stitch if it is dropped early in the garment.

 1.

Start with a slip knot on the left hand needle to form the first stitch

2.

To make the second stitch.  Place the right hand needle through the front of the first stitch on the left hand needle to form a cross.  Take the wool (from the ball) and wrap it around the right hand needle, working anti-clockwise starting around the back of the needle
3.

Pull the wool tight around the needle and draw it down so it sits in the cross between the two needles.  Using the right hand pull the loop through the first stitch and
4.

Place on left hand needle to produce the second stitch.
5.
For all additional stitches.  Remove the needle from within the new stitch.  Place the needle into the gap between the last two stitches on the needle.  Taking care not put the needle through either of the stitches.
6.

Take the wool (from the ball) and wrap it around the right hand needle, working anti-clockwise starting around the back of the needle
7.
And as in step 3, Pull the wool tight around the needle and draw it down so it sits in the cross between the two needles.
8.
Using the right hand pull the loop through the gap between the two stitches
9.
Place the loop onto the left hand needle to produce the next stitch.  Repeat steps 5 to 9 until the desired number of stitches have been created.
