Aunty Biscuit is doing one row double then one row treble crochet on a strip for the oddments dog blanket (current shade a rather pretty delicate peach) .  This gives it nice neat edges at either side.  For knitting, slipping the first stitch on a row also gives a neat firm edge to the piece of work which in turn improves the finish on garments.
